Product design and innovation
We have over 35 years' experience of innovation and product design in volume manufacturing markets covering such diverse sectors as agriculture, power conversion, rotating machinery, LCD displays, music and HVAC.
From electronic component level optimisation through to the mechanics of castings, mouldings, turned parts and sheet metalwork we are able to assist with detail design and advise, with our partners, on associated tooling issues.
Often starting with hand sketches, we take designs from concept through to volume production and can assist with any, or all, of the design stages. Calculations are usually performed from first principles and backed up with simulation if needed. Particular expertise lies with analogue and digital controls, electromagnetics, power electronics, motors, motor rotational dynamics, aeromechanics, HVAC, high voltage, transients and steady state conditions.
We have direct experience of product approvals and design for manufacture, with associated manufacturing partners for products and component parts in both the UK and Far East.
Our schematic capture and PCB layout is done using Pulsonix CAD software, in both 2D and 3D environments.
Our mechanical design and assembly systems use Solidworks CAD software, in both 2D and 3D environments.

Turnkey volume manufacture and B2B
We started out designing and manufacturing products for a small number of select customers that needed a solution to challenges faced within their business.
Our customers had an existing product range and a route to market but the products contained technology that was going obsolete, could not be supported by their internal technical functions, was becoming too costly to manufacture leading to market price pressure and needed updating.
Their internal technical functions were too busy to undertake the work and they did not have the commercial connections to get the cost profiles to a competitive level.

Our business was engaged to reverse engineer the products in the UK, to take ownership of the product range on behalf of the customer by undertaking a short time frame redesign in the UK that would utilise current technology, make some improvements and to set up supply of product at the right cost profile.
Through our manufacturing partners in the Far East we were able to achieve this and our customers were able to achieve their objectives; they now simply place their volume order with us and we handle the complex operational issues to ensure they get the products they need at the right price, at the right time.
We have been working with some of our manufacturing partners for over 30 years and have mature business relationships and direct experience of import and export requirements. We operate with the strictest confidentiality and intellectual property protections, maintaining bill of materials and specification controls in the UK. Our extensive knowledge of the various quality, operational, directive and compliance issues that can arise means that we are 'on the ground' regularly with our manufacturing partners, maintaining standards that our customers would expect.

Schematic design and PCB layout
We have extensive expertise in electronics design and printed circuit board layout, with in depth technical knowledge of the various techniques needed for low noise, high speed, analogue, digital, power electronics, EMC and LVD compliance in a design for manufacture environment.
Whether on single layer or multi layer boards, we are able to advise on material choices, technologies and appropriate manufacturing techniques to meet your requirements.
Our designs are undertaken in Pulsonix for schematic capture, board layout, 2D and 3D viewing.

Product compliance and approvals
We have a thorough working knowledge of legislation, standards and routes to demonstrate compliance at both National and International level for Ecodesign and ErP, EMC, LVD, machinery, RoHS, WEEE and various environmental drafts.
Keepings abreast of the legislative landscape is a core part of our business since it has direct bearing on the technologies, materials and strategic roadmap for product development and implementation.
We are able to assist you with three aspects. Firstly with identification of the appropriate directives and routes to demonstrate compliance relevant to your business needs. Secondly with clear explanation of the critical compliance details and their strategic impact. Thirdly with hands-on evaluation, optimisation and implementation of electronic, mechanical and aeromechanical systems to component part level, often liaising with third party approval agencies or technical committees for clarifications as required.
We can attend at your premises or at third party test sites to assist with diagnostic and remedial activities, particularly related to EMC, LVD and ErP. Alternatively we are able to offer a one-stop solution to manage the approvals process for you, liaising with appropriate third parties.
Our objective when working with you is to achieve a successful outcome within known guidelines and, in the case of standards where judgement is required, an assessment of the available margins and market risks.
Embedded firmware and software development
We work with microcontrollers from Renesas and ST Microelectronics. Our capabilities include writing code in both assembler and ANSI C for embedded systems, dependent on the application and timing criticality.
Our starting point is a clear understanding of your system requirements and we generally seek to determine the initial design brief from face to face discussion. This leads to a presentation of our interpretation of your requirements in flow chart and state mapping format.
Following this we generate code, using both hardware and software debugging techniques with evaluation at all stages.
Experience has led us to prefer to design both hardware and firmware since this can lead to a more robust implementation and saves time in debugging phases.
Particular expertise lies in the areas of motor control, vector control for permanent magnet synchronous motors and induction machines, sequencing, HVAC controls, I2C, power factor correction and high speed pulse detection.

Reverse engineering and obsolescence management
We are able to reverse engineering products if required to meet a particular business need. This can be where documentation has been mislaid or corrupted, where parts have been made obsolete but clear alternatives do not exist or where you simply want 'something that does that, but better'.
Through our extended supply chains we are able to offer alternatives to obsolete parts, with critical component evaluation taking place along with any necessary redesign recommendations. We will always work with you in these areas to ensure that your supply chains are not disrupted and appropriately managed with clear visibility of any stock liability.
Our starting point is the hardware and we are able to test and evaluate electronic, electromechanical and mechanical systems to component level, often with our manufacturing partners to ensure that we have taken all considerations in to account.
